1. The Church demands a six month waiting period, prior to your wedding, during which you must attend pre-marital instructions.
2. If, therefore, you arrange a date for your wedding, let's say with the Ritz-Carlton or on a beach, for four months from today, your local priest is not allowed to perform your marriage on two counts: first, he is not allowed to perform a wedding outside the church/parish setting (except in emergencies); and second, your wedding date is less than six months in the future, and again he cannot officiate at your wedding.
3. Of course, you may encounter other problems with church authorities that would prevent your marriage entirely: if you were originally married in the Catholic Church but now divorced, and your ex is still alive and kicking; or you have applied for, but have been unable to obtain, a Church annulment (Catholic divorce!); or the process is taking forever and your wedding is scheduled long before it might be granted.
4. You want the Sacrament of Marriage, but such regulations, as above, prevent it.
5. Or you really don't want marriage in the Church in the first place , or you want to arrange and customize your own wedding or you prefer an interfaith or civil ceremony, or you still want the Catholic ambiance (blessings, prayers, etc.) in an outside wedding.
6. And, yes, I am still a validly ordained Catholic priest, (now married and a member in good standing of Rent-A Priest) and will gladly provide you with the Catholic ceremony which you and I can and will customize.
7. But, no, I do not include Nuptial Mass as part of the wedding ceremony.
