Gregory Sierra, Sunday 18-Feb-2001 16:11:33,, I'm curious about actor Gregory Sierra he doesn't seem to get mentioned much  here...even though he was a BM regular besides appearing on SANFORD AND SON ALL IN THE FAMILY et al. Is he actually Puerto Rican or at least Hispanic..? Why'd he leave the show...to do the less successful AES HUDSON        STREET? What's he doing these days if anything? One of my favorite eps.  was when he was forced to shoot and kill someone...anyone remember this?  Thanks!

Friday 16-Feb-2001 01:47:50,,The first shows are extremely rough in the writing and expecially in the production. As the show went on it became a lot more subtle. Some of the humor in the mid-to later shows are great.I often wondered why no one had picked it up in syndication.  I am very pleased I can watch it again.,cosmo2, Barney on in Canada

Wednesday 7-Feb-2001 17:03:34,,Last week TV Land showed an episode  where Nick was struck with appendicitis and carried out of the station in a stretcher. They showed a couple episodes with Nick after that but for the last couple days they have been showing episodes with other people at Nick's desk...a lady named Roz and Levitt have been there so far. I noticed on the episode list that Nick's final episode (aside from the Jack        Soo retrospective) comes up next week. Did this string of non-Nick episodes come from a time period where Jack Soo was suffering from cancer to the extent that he couldn't do the show?
Does ANYONE know how they explained Nick's absense after Jack Soo died? I get the feeling they left it ambiguous but given their reverential attitude towards Nick's desk in a later episode it seems that he died as well.,Tice,rustnt@jmu.edu Re:  Nick's last

Hi! Every month TV Land changes it's schedule. Barney Miller is on now at 4 and 4:30 ET and again at 8 ET. The 8:00 airing is a repeat of the 4:00 episode.
Thursday 1-Feb-2001 10:52:34,,I dunno if TVLAND changes it sched every MONTH...What I think has happened is that they are intergrating MTM into the schedule and so they are [were] making adjustments...This schedule SHOULD hold up for a few months....,Lou from the Ol' One-Two

Tuesday 30-Jan-2001 13:23:53,,Hi! I don't know if anyone else does this but I take a good close look at the roster board on the show to see who's on it and who's not. I've noticed an interesting irregularity.

TV Land is showing the episodes in order as near as any source that I've seen indicates yet Fish's name keeps disappearing then reappearing. His name was NOT on the roster board when he returned to help Barney find the body in the park. But yesterday during "Blizzard " his name was back on the board right below his replacement's Dietrich.

Also during that  transition period before Phil's retirement (and yes it does say P. Fish BTW) Dietrich's name would appear then disappear throughout.

I noticed the other day what might have been an homage to another classic 70s show. In 1976 Jim Hutton starred in "Ellery Queen " a superb detective series on NBC. Plain as day on the roster board in a 1976 episode was the        name "Velie " corresponding to the name of Inspector Queen's assistant in        the NYPD. Coincidence? I like to think not! Comments?,Bill  Wilson,wmewilson@ga.prestige.net Re: Roster Board,

Thursday 25-Jan-2001 21:51:35,,Has anyone seen Fish's spinoff? I was wondering what is was like. I'd really love to see it. Fish is my favorite on the show.,Jason Cromer, Re: Fish,Friday 26-Jan-2001 09:39:40,,I don't remember FISH as being all that great..By the way did you know that FISH was originally going to be part of a VERY unusual spin-off series that  Danny Arnold once proposed? ABC was pressuring him for a BARNEY spin-off and he proposed a show called OFF DUTY. This was going to be a rotating show featuring the off duty lives of the members of the 12th Precinct! The proposal was to have four different shows:

1. A show featuring  Barney's life at home with Mrs Miller and kids.
2. Fish and Bernice being the caretakers of a group home filled with kids.
3. Wojo and  Wentwoth's off-duty romance [they would have moved in together].
and 4] A sort of ODD COUPLE type arrangement with Harris and Dietrich as roomies.

As it was it hard enough for them to keep doing BARNEY every week so only FISH came about [VERY briefly..].,Lou from the Ol' One-Two, Re: Fish,
Tuesday 30-Jan-2001 13:18:22,,Hi!

Lou is correct. "Fish" is pretty awful. It was notable for two young stars Todd Bridges who went on        to "Diff'rent Strokes " and Denise Miller who went on to "Archie Bunker's        Place." It lasted a scant two seasons so is infrequently syndicated but my   "Barney Miller: The Collector's Edition" had the episode "The Missing Fish" on my "Quitting Time" tape in conjunction with the two-part "Goodbye Mr. Fish" episode. Interestingly enough George Murdock shows up on the episode as a different cop even though he'd already been established in        "Block Party" as Lt. Scanlon.,Bill Wilson,wmewilson@ga.prestige.net Barney        Miller Idea?,
Wednesday 24-Jan-2001 22:23:11,,
Hi all...I have an idea in my head for a Barney Miller story. (I write fanfiction in some other fandoms-all classic 70's shows) What if the sale of the 12th Precinct were to fall through? The buyer pulls out of the deal after it's discovered the gun Wojo found wasn't actually a historic artifact but a reproduction. Thus the building doesn't qualify to be on the National Register of Historic Places and the property value drops to nil. The property reverts back to the city and they decide to reopen it as a police precinct since they can't find anyone else to buy it and community pressure is strong.

Wojo was sent to Roosevelt Island Levitt to Brooklyn Harris to        Queens(although they left things in a way that hinted he may quit the   force)and Detrich went to Washington Heights. But when word gets around that the 12th Precinct is back they all jump at the chance to return even though it's considered an undesirable assignment. Harris was about to hand in his resignation when he heard the news and begins to reconsider.   Meanwhile Barney is stuck behind a desk at Manhattan South hating  every miinute of his new position (he got promoted to Deputy Inspector in the last episode). Then Luger announces he's retiring and has recommended Barney as his replacement. Barney is not exactly thrilled. Luger also mentions to him
that the 12th is back in business. Barm drops by on the gang's first day back and discovers not everything old is  new again. There's a new Captain-Scanlon! Seems his rabid ways got him demoted from IA and assigned to regular police work. Barney's shocked yet        amused. There's also a few new uniforms-including Levitt's "mail call!" replacement-a tough yet sweet female cop (I miss Wentworth!). And the building itself is a crazy quilt of the old and the partially        renovated.
Barney decides the only way to get himself back where he        belongs is to get demoted. Otherwise he feels he's doomed to a ride on the "train to Lugerville." Will he succeed?
Anyway this story is bouncing around in my head and I've already written a little.Anyone interested in reading the whole story or should I trash the whole thing? Feel free to e-mail me!

,Sue,PassionatePen@juno.com Re: Barney Miller Idea?,Thursday        25-Jan-2001 20:44:20,,I think you have a great idea. I just love the fact that one of my favorite shows of the 70's has such a fan. The characters of the 12th have always been a favorite of mine. Deitrich and Wojo were my favorites; one dry one emotional. I love your storyline. if you can sell  it let me know. Keep writing. - Lesleric ,Leslie,lesleric@aol.com

The Greatest Show on Earth,Tuesday 20-Feb-2001 23:23:21,,Born July 27 1945 I was glued to every Barny Miller episode. TVland has brought me back in time. I truly loved each character. Ron Glass was my favorite. He was so very cool. I just love his mannerism. He was just perfect for the part.  His fro grew and shrunk each year as did the styles. Actually now that I watch each episode I don't think there is any sitcom that can replace the humor and the characters. It could replace "Friends". Easy! All you actors from each episode that given us all so much laughter and memories I want to thank you! And Ron if you ever read this really well put together webpage I would really enjoy to know how you are doing....Thanks a million...David ,David Tibbitts,snakeriverrat@aol.com

Barney Miller,Tuesday 20-Feb-2001 14:12:29,,What a Grand show! The characters and the writing match each other perfectly. I think I'm in love!,TheCatLover, Barn iller,Monday 5-Feb-2001 23:43:53,, It seems that TVLand is giving usthe abridged versions of the show. I've noticed some very abrupt edits in the beginning middle and ends of the shows lately.Characters appear and dissappear from the squad room. It's annoying. The running times of the shows are down to about 20 minutes. Damn commercials. ,Tom,

HALLELUJAH!!!,Wednesday 31-Jan-2001 17:40:54,,TV Land is now up to the fourth season and they have RESTORED the longer/different/better version of the opening theme song which hasn't been shown since the original prime-time run!!! This longer version [with the upward key change near the end] was used alternately with the shorter version on prime-time broadcasts from seasons 4 thru 8.

In 1982 during Barney's final season I suspected that this long version would be eliminated when the show went into syndication [as had happened with many other sitcoms I.E "Cheers"  "Taxi" etc] so during one of the final re-runs that summer I took mylittle battery operated tape recorder and audio-taped the long version. My suspicions were correct soon after: when the final season joined the other        episodes in syndication the long version was gone and a few years later Barney was gone too. All I had was my little cassette and my        memories......until now! Barney is back and the long version of the songis back! Actor Name,Sunday 26-Nov-2000 16:46:25,,Ok on the episode titled The Desk (1979 season I think) there's an attorney character who
represents a prisoner who has been lobotomized.
Anyhow the attorney character sounds  a lot like
a young Jason Alexander but I'm almost positive
Alexander would have been too young to play the
part. So who played the attorney character?

Too bad I don't get  either of these networks in Canada but I have been lucky enough to see the show for the last year and a half on a station in Alberta Canada.
