After
seeing several comedies that I enjoyed in the 1970's such as "Odd
Couple", "All in the Family", "Maude", "Taxi" and others, I note that
today they don't seem as funny to me as they did then. "Barney Miller"
is the big exception, it is HILARIOUS! However, I will add a little
criticism (1) I couldn't figure out originally why Gregory Sierra
(Chano) would leave a hit show, but I noticed that he wasn't being used
to much before he left. He was a very interesting character that showed
promise in the episode from the first season when he killed a suspect.
However, he just went downhill after that. (2) Didn't care for Barney's wife, Liz. I am glad they got rid of her. (3)
Fish is very funny for quick quips but episodes that focus on him and
his endless complaints, particularly about Bernice get on my nerves. (4)
It is interesting how originally Harris spoke in a tone of black
"jive", although later he toned it down, but when he would get excited
it would come out. (5) I don't think any show today could show the
recurring homosexual characters, Marty and Mr Driscoll, the way they
were portrayed then....on the one hand their behavior was satirized, but
then again so was those who were afraid of them (especially Wojo and
Inspector Lugar). (5) Harris, once while talking in his sleep said
Barney was a "compassionate turkey"...that is well said.. Barney was
sometimes too compassionate, but that was the point.
A truly magnificent series. |
